Severe & profound hearing loss It's understood that people with severe and profound hearing loss need a lot of power from their hearing aids. But they are also looking for usable power without feedback with the best sound possible for their ears and brain to receive. If your super power instruments are to make a tangible difference, they must address two factors in particular: amplification and overall audibility of the signal.
Amplification and audibility In cases of severe hearing loss the extent of damage to the cochlea (inner ear/nerve fibers) reduces the area of your remaining hearing to the low frequency region only. Therefore, a hearing aid that increases audibility across the entire range of frequencies, from low to very high, is not the perfect solution.
Random application of excessive power can distort the sound quality and negatively impact speech intelligibility. Furthermore, too much power can cause extreme discomfort.
By providing carefully controlled levels of sound amplification and power, only in the frequency regions where you can benefit from amplification, SUMO improves overall audibility without compromising on comfort. |
